Partners and Players

The Legacy Project’s success is attributed to collaborative work with a  myriad of partners and players.   A sampling are listed below.

Legacy works closely with the Burlington Electric Department, including efforts on the Climate Action Plan.   BED, the city’s municipal energy provider, derives over 60% of its energy from renewable energy.   Thanks to the MacNeil Generating Plant, and BED’s energy efficiency, Burlington’s energy use has remained steady over the last 20 years.

The Burlington Food Council — born in conjuction with the Burlington School Food Project – was started in response to community interest for healthy, local food in the Burlington school cafeterias.   Legacy provides administrative and managerial support to the Food Council, and is a member of the BSFP along with the School District Food Service, Shelburne Farm’s Sustainable Schools Project, Vermont FEED, the Intervale Foundation, Burlington’s City Market.  Food Council members also include Fletcher Allen Health Care,  University of Vermont’s Campus Kitchen,

Committed to reducing the City’s environmental footprint, saving money, and serving as a model for others in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from City operations, Mayor Kiss launched a “green team” composed of representatives from each City department in 2009.  Legacy plays a leading role in coordinating the work of this Burlington Sustainabilty Action Team (BSAT).

In 2008, Mayor Kiss launched an Energy and Environmental Coordinating Committee.  Managed by Legacy, this group was charged with recommending ways for the City to reduce its Carbon Footprint.  After months of deliberation, the group came up with recommendations related to transportation.   These recommendations were presented by Legacy on behalf of the City Council in May 2008.
